Disney Movies and Shows We’re Most Excited to Watch in 2022
There are so many good ones this year!
Disney has been producing some real winners lately — like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Encanto, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Free Guy. Even though the pandemic has taken its toll on movie theaters, Disney still managed to top the box office in 2021. And with even more Phase Four Marvel movies, plus nostalgic Disney sequels coming in 2022, it’s safe to assume Disney will be a top contender this year as well.
There are quite a few Disney movies and shows hitting theaters and Disney+ in 2022, but these are the ones that have us the most excited.
The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder (February 23, 2022)
We grew up knowing and loving Disney Channel’s The Proud Family, so it’s safe to say The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is going on our watchlist immediately.
The show will follow the same antic-filled Proud family, but this time during the 2020s. OK, yes, it doesn’t make sense that they haven’t aged since the show ended in 2005 (why are the babies still babies?), but we’re not too concerned about that because we’re just too excited for this reboot!
Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness (May 6, 2022)
If Spider-Man: No Way Home didn’t get you excited for the Multiverse madness (because it’s definitely going to be madness), then you’re not a true Marvel fan. Not only do we get more Doctor Strange — who is quite enjoyable to watch — but we’ll also get to see what Wanda has been up to since she held an entire town hostage because she couldn’t cope with Vision’s death.
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Doctor Strange casts a spell that opens the door to the Multiverse. This leads to an alternate version of Doctor Strange breaking through. This Doctor Strange is a huge threat to society, so Strange, Wanda, and Wong will have to try to defeat him.
Lightyear (June 17, 2022)
We didn’t know we needed a movie about the human Buzz Lightyear, but now that we’re getting one, we couldn’t imagine a life without Chris Evans’ Buzz. There isn’t much out there about Lightyear, other than it’s an origin story for legendary Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear, who inspired the toy in Toy Story. We might not know much else, but we do know the sci-fi adventure movie looks good.
Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8, 2022)
If you can’t tell, we stan (lee) Marvel movies and if there’s one Marvel movie we really can’t wait to watch this year, it’s Thor: Love and Thunder. Yes, we’re getting the hilarious Thor, but more importantly our girl Natalie Portman is back and ready to prove herself as a superhero baddie.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (November 11, 2022)
Marvel Phase Four is seriously getting out of hand with the amount of stellar movies they’re giving us — but we’re not complaining. Following Chadwick Boseman’s death, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will dive deeper into the world of Wakanda. While it doesn’t seem like they will recast T’Challa, and instead kill him off in this sequel, many fans are calling for Marvel to rethink this decision. But with production underway, who knows what Marvel will do. Plus, production for this film has suffered many setbacks and the release date has already been pushed back, so who even knows if we’ll get this movie in 2022.
Disenchanted (Fall 2022)
Disney is bringing back SO many childhood favorites this year and we are SO here for it! The sequel to the 2007 film Enchanted is finally coming and bringing back all of our favorite characters, like Giselle, Prince Edward, Nancy, and Robert. The film is set 10 years after Giselle and Robert’s happily ever after where Giselle is questioning her happiness in the real world. Not only will Disenchanted have the original cast, but there’s also some fun new faces like Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jayma Mays.
Hocus Pocus 2 (Fall 2022)
Speaking of sequels we’ve been waiting forever for… this Halloween sequel is nearly 30 years in the making. Not only are our favorite Sanderson sisters making a return, but one of our favorite Disney directors, Kenny Ortega, is coming back to direct the Hocus Pocus sequel.
We don’t know what this movie entails, but, truthfully, we don’t really care because we know it’s going to be a masterpiece.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (Holiday Season 2022)
Disney could definitely use some more holiday specials and movies and who better to celebrate with than the Guardians of the Galaxy. This group is so entertaining to watch and we can’t wait to see what kind of holiday hijinx they’ll get themselves into.
Bonus: I Am Groot also comes out this year and even though Groot literally says three words, it should be a fun series of shorts — similar to Olaf Presents.
Aladdin: Live From the West End (TBD 2022)
After the success of the live recording of Hamilton, Disney is giving another one of their hit musicals the recognition it deserves. This performance was filmed live at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End. Plus, it features one of the original Broadway cast members, and an original Aladdin actor, Jonathan Freeman, who voiced Jafar in the original movie and originated the role of Jafar on Broadway. We already know it’s going to be spectacular.
